School Vending Machines: Yes or No? By Aviva Weiser

Is the school getting vending machines? Good question, and the answer is, it's not completely decided either way. Sure, the school’s trying to get them. There’s a Change Management Proposal, and many students are in favor of them. However, the school is hesitant, due to high volumes of tardies, ditching, littering, and graffiti.

To get vending machines, we’ll need to see lower levels of these metrics. Ms. Couture and Ms. Curry have emphasized the conditional nature of vending machines based on student improvement.

The vending machines themselves are another issue. It’s challenging to find a location to put them, what to stock them with, and how to stop them from conflicting with cafeteria sales.

However, these issues are quickly being resolved. Students have latched onto the idea of vending machines with enthusiasm, with 126 people responding to the form within a week, giving valuable input on where to put the vending machines. Responses ranged from “near the elevators” to “next to the engineering lab” and to the more common “Future Center” and “cafeteria”.

The location has to account for many factors, such as not blocking up the halls during passing periods, and not competing with the cafeteria. That’s why we’re happy to announce that there is a proposed location: a supply vending machine in the commons, and a snack and drink vending machine in the Future Center.

In terms of food, there’s more variation. Chips and Pretzels was the number one item, with 86% of respondents selecting it as a food item they would want. Candy Bars came in second at 75%, and students had many other good ideas, including ramen, different sodas, and specific types of candy.

As soon as the student leaders get approval, they will meet with the vendor to discuss installing the vending machines, and there will be an update within two weeks!
